Common SEO Mistakes I See on 90% of Local Business Websites

Google My Business GMB optimization

Why the Same Mistakes Keep Appearing

I have audited hundreds of local business websites over 20 years and the same mistakes appear with remarkable consistency. Most local businesses build their site once and never revisit the SEO foundation. The web evolves, Google evolves, and the site sits there slowly losing ground.

Mistake 1: Under-Optimized Google Business Profile

For any local service business, GBP is your most important visibility asset. I routinely see unclaimed GBP listings, no photos, no posts, and bare-minimum descriptions. Competitors who take GBP seriously dominate the local pack. Fix: claim, complete, and actively manage your GBP. Post weekly. Get reviews consistently.

Mistake 2: Homepage Targeting Generic Keywords Only

Homepages targeting best dentist instead of dentist in San Diego. Without geographic qualifiers, you are competing nationally for terms you cannot realistically rank for. Fix: include your city in your title tag, H1, and body copy.

Mistake 3: One Service Page for All Services

Each service should have its own page, optimized for its specific keyword. A single Services page cannot rank for multiple distinct service keywords. Fix: build individual pages for each core service.

Mistake 4: Missing or Duplicate Title Tags

Missing title tags default to the URL or page name. Fix: every page needs a unique, keyword-optimized title tag under 60 characters.

Mistake 5: No Schema Markup

Most local business sites have no schema at all. Fix: implement LocalBusiness schema on your homepage, Article schema on blog posts, and FAQPage schema on FAQ pages. RankMath handles most of this automatically if configured.

Mistake 6: Slow Mobile Experience

Google uses mobile-first indexing. Sites that load slowly on mobile are penalized. Fix: run Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile and address the top recommendations.

Mistake 7: No Internal Linking Strategy

Pages on most small business sites are effectively siloed. Fix: add 2-3 contextual internal links to every piece of content you publish. For the full playbook see our guide on internal linking strategy.

Mistake 8: Irrelevant Blog Content

Blog posts written for the business owner, not for the potential customer. Fix: publish content around specific keywords your potential customers actually search.

Mistake 9: No Review Acquisition Strategy

Most businesses rely on reviews coming in organically. Fix: implement a proactive process. Send a review link after every job or appointment.

Mistake 10: NAP Inconsistency Across Directories

Business name, address, and phone number appearing slightly differently across directories sends confusing signals to Google. Fix: run a citation audit and standardize your NAP across every listing.
