Schema Markup Explained: A Non-Technical Guide for Business Owners

Best web design front page award

What Is Schema Markup and Why Does It Matter?

Schema markup (structured data) is code you add to your website to help search engines understand your content more precisely. Google uses this information to serve richer search results — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, event dates, and product prices directly in the search results. For business owners, the value proposition is simple: schema markup can make your search result look significantly better than competitors, leading to higher click-through rates even when you are not ranked number one.

How Schema Markup Works

Think of schema markup as labeling your content for Google. Instead of just showing Google a page about your dental practice, schema explicitly tells Google: this is a Dentist, their address is X, their phone is Y, they have 4.8 stars from 127 reviews, they accept these insurance types, and they are open Monday through Friday.

Most Important Schema Types for Local Businesses

LocalBusiness Schema

Goes on your homepage or contact page. Tells Google who you are, where you are located, and how to contact you. First schema to implement for any local business.

Article Schema

Added to every blog post. Tells Google this is an article, who wrote it, when it was published, and what it is about. Supports eligible rich results in news and discover feeds.

FAQPage Schema

One of the most valuable schema types for local businesses. When implemented correctly, it can trigger an expandable FAQ block directly in Google search results — giving you extra visual real estate on the SERP without requiring any higher ranking.

Service Schema

Specifically identifies a page as describing a service offering. Useful for service businesses who want to clearly signal to Google what each service page is about.

AggregateRating Schema

Displays star ratings in search results. Can significantly increase click-through rates.

BreadcrumbList Schema

Shows the page hierarchy in search results (Home > Services > Botox) instead of just the URL.

How to Implement Schema Without Coding

  • RankMath Schema Generator: Built into RankMath Pro — add schema types per page from the WordPress editor sidebar
  • Google Rich Results Test: Validate your existing schema and see what rich results you may qualify for
  • Schema.org: The official reference for all schema types

Common Schema Mistakes

  • Schema with incorrect or outdated information (old phone numbers, wrong hours)
  • FAQPage schema on pages where the FAQ does not actually exist in visible content
  • Duplicate schema from multiple plugins
  • No schema at all on pages that would clearly benefit

Does Schema Directly Improve Rankings?

Schema is not a direct ranking factor but it indirectly improves rankings by increasing click-through rates, helping Google understand your content more accurately, and enabling rich results that stand out in the SERP. The FAQ schema in particular has a consistent positive impact on CTR in my client data. Schema validation is one of the steps I check in my SEO audit process.
